COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The No. 3 Old Dominion University field hockey team used a pair of goals in the first half to propel them to a 2-1 win over No. 1 Maryland on a warm Friday night at the Field Hockey/Lacrosse Complex.
It was the third consecutive regular season victory for ODU (2-1) over Maryland (2-1), who ended the Terps' 38-game home win streak last season. This season, the Lady Monarchs handed UM their first loss in a home opener in 17 years.
The Lady Monarchs scored early for the second consecutive contest as they capitalized on the first penalty corner of the game in the fifth minute when freshman Sarah Breen launched the ball put into the back of the cage past Maryland goalkeeper Natalie Hunter for her second goal of the season. Sophomore Rosario Villagra launched it from the end line and sophomore Kelsey Smither positioned the ball for her third assist in as many games.
Burning down the field in transition midway through the first half, senior Kimberly Oakes scored what proved to be the game-winner on an assist from junior co-captain Kati Nearhouse to put ODU in front, 2-0.
A defensive battled after halftime for much of the second half. Maryland was able to get on the board with just under 10 minutes to play as Katie Gerzabek scored her fourth goal of the season on a long backhand shot with an assist from Megan Frazer.
The Terps would eventually pull their goalie in place of a defender and another body on the field and pushed hard to try and find the equalizer with a flurry of penalty corners late including one as time expired in the second half that would end up being blocked by the Old Dominion defense to preserve the victory.
Freshman goalkeeper Friederike Jahns collected three saves while Hunter had five for the Terps. Maryland outshot ODU, 12-9, and had the advantage in penalty corner, 7-3.
Old Dominion returns to action on the road against another ACC foe on Sunday as they travel to Charlottesville to face No. 8 Virginia (3-1) at 1 p.m.
