WASHINGTON, D.C. – The No. 3 Old Dominion University field hockey team picked up their first win of the 2012 season on Sunday afternoon as they rode a pair of first half goals to defeat No. 25 American, 2-1, at the Jacobs Recreational Complex.
Redshirt junior Christy Longacre scored her second goal in as many games as ODU wasted little time scoring. Assisted by sophomores Kelsey Smither and Rosario Villagra, Longacre found the back of the cage just over two minutes into the game to put the Lady Monarchs in front early, 1-0.
Less than two minutes later, American (0-2) would the equalizer as Keelin Winslow scored to tie the game.
After registering an assist early in the game, Villagra scored what proved to be the game winner midway through the first half for her first career goal to put ODU back in front, 2-1.
Defense would prevail the remainder of the game. Freshman goalkeeper Friederike Jahns collected one save in the game for ODU. The game was delayed 30 minutes after halftime due to lightning in the area.
ODU outshot AU, 20-4, and had the 11-4 advantage in penalty corners. Eagles goalkeeper Ashley Dalisera had nine saves in the game for American.
Old Dominion (1-1) returns to action on the road against a pair of ACC foes when they face the two-time defending national champions No. 1 Maryland on Friday night at 7 p.m. in College Park, Md. Next Sunday, the Lady Monarchs travel to No. 8 Virginia for a 1 p.m. start in Charlottesville.
