NORFOLK, Va. – The Old Dominion University women's lacrosse team and head coach Heather Holt announced the addition of former University of Richmond standout Ashley Vellines to the coaching staff on Friday while former ODU star Ashley Kellogg will enter her second season as an assistant on the Lady Monarch staff.

“I am very excited to bring both Ashley Kellogg and Ashley Vellines onto this staff,” said Holt. “Last year, Kellogg was a big part of re-focusing this program. She was an amazing player while at ODU and her commitment, game sense, and passion translate directly into her coaching. Ashley Vellines will bring a new and fresh style to our coaching staff.  She was a dominant player at Richmond with amazing skills and fierce spirit on the field.  Her knowledge of the game, familiarity with the club circuit, and passion for ODU athletics will be a great addition for our program."

Kellogg was a four-year starter from 2007-10, and ranks eighth in career points with 152 and fourth in goals with 128. She was a two-time All-CAA performer as well. She earned her masters degree in sport management from ODU in 2011 and originally hails from Downingtown, Pa. Her younger sister Casey currently plays lacrosse at Hofstra.

In her first season, she helped guide the Lady Monarchs to their first ever win over Louisville and their first win over rival William & Mary since 2007. She also helped coach a pair of all-conference players in senior midfielder Lisa Bernardini (First Team All-CAA) and senior defender Hannah McBee (Second Team All-CAA).

Vellines, formerly Friend, has spent the last three years as the group and premium services manager at the Ted Constant Convocation Center. A 2007 graduate of Richmond, she was a four-year starting midfielder and posted a record of 46-17 (.730) while winning the Atlantic 10 conference three times. A draw specialist for the Spiders, Vellines racked up 108 draws and is fifth all-time in school history in goals (151), seventh in assists (42) and seventh in points (193).

A two-time all-conference first team selection, Vellines, who hails from Canandaigua, N.Y., comes from a strong lacrosse family as her father played at Bowling Green and Geneseo State. Her younger sister Mandy played with Vellines at Richmond and finished as the school’s all-time leader in goals, assists and points while her youngest sister Abbey is a rising junior at North Carolina and was the national freshman of the year in 2011. Earning her masters degree in recreation and sport management from VCU in 2008, Vellines and her husband John reside in Norfolk.
