MIDLOTHIAN, VA.-- ODU Sports Hall of Famer and All-American Jon Hurst ('91, Fredericksburg, VA.) heads a list of three former Monarch golfers competing in the VSGA SunTrust State Open at the Independance Golf Club.

Joining Hurst is Troy Thorne ('99,Warsaw, VA.) and Jeffrey Long ('10, Centreville, VA.).

After the first round Thursday, Hurst shot 37-35=72 and is 15th among amateurs and is seven strokes behind the leader, Richmond area pro Ted Brown who finished the daywith a 65.

Troy Thorne shot 38-39=77 and Jeff Long shot 39-39=78.Following today's second round,the field will be cut to the low 70 competitors.

Long earned All-CAA honors and placed 11th at the 2008 CAA Championships. Thorne isa two-time All-CAA selection, including a first team selection in 1999.

Hurst was ODU's first Division I All-American in golf. Hurst took sixth in the NCAA Regionals at Yale in 1991 and earned All-American honors at the NCAA NationalChampionships, at Monterey, Calif. As a senior, the Dumfries, Va. native won five Collegiate tournaments and posted two seconds and one third in 12 regular seasonmatches. He compiled a 72.5 stroke average in 1990-91 and was namedthe 1991 Virginia Collegiate Golfer of the Year.

Hurst was also a top ranked golfer in District III and was selected to play in the East-West Collegiate All-Star matches in 1991. That season, he helped Old Dominion place tenth or higher in all 12 events. In the summer of 1990, Hurst won the prestigious Eastern Amateur in Portsmouth, Va., by ten strokes. In 1989 Hurst captured the Sun Belt Conference title with a 220, as the Monarchsplaced second. He took second in the 1990 Sun Belt championships and third in 1991.He was inducted into the Old Dominion University Sports Hall of Fame in April of 1996.
