TOWSON, MD-- Senior righthander Ben Tomchick (Virginia Beach, VA.) tossed a complete game five-hit shutout to lead the Monarchs (11-20/3-8) to a 7-0 victory over Towson (13-15/8-6) Saturday afternoon at Schuerholz Park, ending ODU's six-game losing streak.
Tomchick walked no one, fanned five and the only inning Towson got more than one runner on base was the first inning with Brandan Butler and Dominic Fratantuonu were aboard. Tomchick then got Kurt Wertz to hit into a double play to end the inning. Tomchick retired the last eight batters he faced.
ODU jumped on the board first in the second inning with three straight singles by sophomore Joey Burney( Gloucester, VA.),Freshman Mike Perez (Fairfax Station, VA.) and senior Brandon Shelton (Chesapeake, VA.) with Burney scoring on Shelton's single.
In the sixth Joey Burney's single. Senior thirdbaseman Brent Frazier (Fairfax Station,VA.) homered in the seventh, his second of the year to give ODU a 3-0 lead.
ODU added four runs in the ninth as junior outfielder Kenneth Belgrave (Norfolk, Va.) singled home Mike Perez. Baker followed with an RBI hit to score both Belgrave and Josh Wright (Bridgewater, VA.), and Josh Tutwiler (Bridgewater, VA.) doubled home outfielder Josh Eldridge (Lorton, Va.) for the 7-0 lead.
Tutwiler and Burney each had two hits for ODU, while seven different Monarchs scored.
Andrew Parker led Towson with two of the five hits. The third and final game of the series is Sunday at 1 p.m.
