NORFOLK, Va. – After a tie game at the half, the Old Dominion University Lacrosse team managed just one goal in the second half in a 9-5 defeat to Delaware on a cool and blustery evening at the Powhatan Sports Complex on Friday.

Despite outshooting Delaware (3-9, 1-1) in the contest, 21-20, the Old Dominion (4-8, 1-1) offense was never in synch on Friday evening in large part to the fact that the Blue Hens goalkeeper Alex Zaugra racked up 12 saves. It was the first home CAA game of the season for ODU and the first night game at home this season for the Lady Monarchs as well. The Blue Hens, who had not won since late February, snapped an eight-game losing streak and beat ODU for the sixth consecutive season.

In a back-and-forth affair in the first half, UD’s Chelsea Fay scored the first two goals of the game for the Blue Hens with an unassisted goal from senior midfielder Lisa Bernardini, who has now scored in 11 of 12 games this season, wedged in between. ODU then took a 3-2 lead on back-to-back goals within a minute from senior midfielder Rebecca Hartrum and junior midfielder Jordynn Collins with 10 minutes to play in the first half. UD then equalized the game before senior midfielder Sarah Wright put the Lady Monarchs back in front, 4-3. Fay found the goal for the third time in the first half with less than four minutes to go tie things up at 4-4 at the half.

The second half was controlled by Delaware as the Blue Hens scored two goals early in the half. After an ODU timeout, sophomore midfielder Emily Austerberry was able to cut the deficit to one goal but that would be as close as the Lady Monarchs would get as Delaware scored the remaining three goals with long possessions and held ODU without a goal for the remainder of half to secure the 9-5 victory.

Five different Lady Monarchs scored on Friday night while senior goalie Sarah Geary gathered eight saves and six groundballs. Fay racked up four goals and an assist to lead UD while Caitlin McCartney also scored three times to lead the Blue Hens.

ODU returns to action at home on Sunday at 1 p.m. at the Powhatan Sports Complex when they host Towson (8-3, 2-0) who won at William & Mary tonight, 8-7. Live video and live stats will be available at ODUSports.com in addition to updates on Twitter at @ODULacrosse.
