Burney and Engler Drive In Two Runs Each in Loss to No. 13 NC State

NORFOLK, VA--Thirteenth ranked North Carolina State (20-7) got 16 hits and two homers to defeat Old Dominion (10-19)Wednesday night at the Bud Metheny Complex, 16-6. The contest was called after the seventh inning because of lightning in the area.

After NC State took a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning on a three-run homer by Danny Canela, ODU rallied to take a 4-3lead in the bottom of the first. Joey Burney knocked in both Josh Eldridge and Baker with a single. The fourth run came on Austin McGowan's ground out which plated Burney from third.

The Wolfpack then scored six runs in both the third and four innings. Tarran Senay's two-run double in the third put NC Stateup for good at 5-4.

Ryan Mathews, who hit a three-run homer in the fourth led NC State with four RBI, followed by Danny Canela with three. Chris Diaz had three hits and three runs scored.

ODU scored two more runs in the bottom of the seventh on a two-run single by freshman D.J. Engler which plated Ben Verlander and JoshWright. Monarch catcher Josh Tutwiler led ODU with two hits on the night.

ODU returns to action this weekend at Towson for a three-game CAA series beginning Friday at 3 pm.
