RICHMOND, Va. - Aleksandra Mitrovska defeated Melissa Kandinata at No. 2 singles 7-6, 3-6, 7-6 to clinch the team victory as Old Dominion women's tennis knocked off No. 73 Richmond Wednesday afternoon.
The win is the first for Old Dominion over a ranked opponent since a 5-2 win over No. 50 Denver in the 2009-10 season.
ODU dropped all three doubles matches to start the match, but fought back in singles as Diana Ivanova got things started with a dominant 6-3, 6-0 win over Joanna Matuszczyk at No. 1 singles.
Nika Khmolovska got ODU's second win with a 7-5, 6-2 triumph over Alexandra Smyth at the No. 5 spot.
The Spiders picked up wins at No. 4 and No. 6 singles with wins from Elizabeth Sims and Nil Horoz.
Melissa Esnal Olguin gave the Lady Monarchs their third victory with a come-from-behind 1-6, 6-4, 6-3 win over Helen Cunningham at the No. 3 spot.
Mitrovska clinched the win with her dramatic three-set win over Kandinata at No. 2.
The win snaps a five-match losing streak for ODU and the loss stops a three-match winning streak for UR.
ODU is back in action April 1 when they take on Marshall at VCU.
