NORFOLK, VA-- Freshman Josh Eldridge knocked in Austin McCowan in the ninth, but Rutgers behind the pitching of Rob Corsi and Ryan Fasano defeated ODU, 5-1 Sunday afternoon.
The Monarchs lone run came in the bottom of the ninth. Pinch hitter Austin McGowanled off with a single, moved to second on an error and third on a Josh Tutwilersingle. He then scored on Eldriges groundout.
Corsi, a lefthander pitched seven innings, allowing just five hits, two walks andtwo strikeouts for the Scarlett Knights who win the series. Ryan Fasano pitched the final two innings.
Sophomore outfielder/pitcher Ben Verlander led ODU with two hits on the day. Shawn Sizemore,Brandon Shelton and Drew Coker also had one hit each for the Monarchs.
Nick Favatella led Rutgers with two RBI with a ground out in the third to score Brian O'Grady and a single in the seenth to scorePat Sweeney. Patrick Kivlehan andSweeney each had two hits on the day for Rutgers.
ODU returns to action Tuesday when they host Richmond at 3 p.m. at the Bud MethenyBaseball Complex.
