CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - The No. 23 Old Dominion University Wrestling team concluded their regular season with a 31-3 loss on Sunday afternoon at No. 21 Virginia.
Again shorthanded on the weekend, three of ODU's nationally ranked wrestlers were absent from the lineup against the Cavaliers (10-1). It was the worst loss of the season for the Monarchs (13-10) and the fewest points they have scored in a dual since a 30-3 loss to No. 13 Ohio State back on Nov. 12.
ODU began the dual down 6-0 as the Monarchs forfeited their match at 125 pounds. In the lone victory on the afternoon, sophomore Scott Festejo, who also won Friday at Binghamton, handed UVA's No. 20 Matthew Nelson just his fourth loss of the season, 6-4, at 133 pounds in the upset.
In one of two matches that featured ranked wrestlers from both teams, sophomore No. 26 Justin LaValle lost a heartbreaker to No. 7 Nick Nelson at 141 pounds, 1-0. No. 20 Gus Sako took care of redshirt junior Brennan Brumley at 149 pounds, 8-1, to give UVA a 12-3 team lead.
Again filling in for No. 23 John Nicholson, freshman Jacob Kingett was defeated via major decision at 157 pounds by UVA's Jedd Moore, 19-7. In the other dual of the afternoon with a pair of ranked wrestlers squaring off, the Cavaliers' No. 16 Nick Sulzer got the better of sophomore No. 21 Tristan Warner at 165 pounds, 4-1.
Vinny Waldhauser for UVA was able to defeat redshirt junior Brett Miller, in for No. 13 Te Edwards at 165 pounds, with a 10-4 decision while redshirt sophomore Billy Curling battled No. 14 Jon Fausey tough at 184 pounds before eventually falling, 4-1.
UVA's Ryan Malo shutout senior Joe Budi at 197 pounds, 4-0, while Derek Papgianopoulos downed redshirt sophomore Matt Tourdot at heavyweight, 8-3.
Old Dominion is off now for nearly two weeks as they prepare for the CAA Championships on Saturday, March 3 at Binghamton University.
