NORFOLK, VA-- Darius Theus' layup with 30 seconds broke a 61-61 tie to lift the Rams of VCU to a 68-64 CAA victory over the Monarchs atsold out Constant Center Saturday.
ODU is now 16-11 overall and 11-4 in the CAA, while the Rams are 22-5 overall and 13-2 in the CAA.
Donte Hill led ODU with a career high 15 points, followed by Kent Bazemore with 14 and Nick Wright with 12 points.
Down, 50-42 with 7:55 left in the game, the Monarchs rallied to tie the game atat 52-52 with 4:48 left on a three-pointer by Donte Hill. The game would be tiedthree more times - at 54-54 on a Nick Wright layup and with ODU leading, 61-58 with52 seconds left Bradford Burgess hits a trey to tie the game at 61-61.
After an ODU turnover, Theus hits a layup and then a free throw to make it 64-61.He then hit two more free throws for a 66-61 lead with 16 seconds remaining. TrianIliadis cut it to two with a trey, but Briante Weber hit two free throws withsix seconds left to ice the win for VCU.
ODU led by as much as 12, 26-14 with 7:21 left after a Donte Hill three-pointer, butthe Rams cut the lead to three at halftime, 36-33.
ODU dominated the boards, 48-36 as Nick Wright hauled down a career high 11 rebounds along withKent Bazmore with eight and Chris Cooper with nine. Cooper also blocked fiveshots on the night.
VCU was led by Bradford Burgess with 24 points, six rebounds and five steals.DariusTheus added 14 points.
ODU shot .361 for the game ater hitting .560 (14-25) in the first half. VCU finished at .380(19-50), but hit 20-27 free throws to ODU's 15-27 free throws.
The Monarchs return home on Tuesday night when they host the Seahawks of UNCWat 7 p.m. in the Constant Center.
