NORFOLK, Va. - Tia Lewis hit a layup with 44 seconds left to tie the score but Tarik Hislop hit a runner in the lane with 3.7 seconds left to lift James Madison to a 57-55 win Wednesday night at the Ted Constant Center.
Old Dominion (7-15, 4-6) played its best defensive game of the year, holding James Madison to just 33.3 percent shooting from the floor and outrebounded the Dukes 59-38.
James Madison pushed their lead to four with three minutes to play, but Myeisha Hall and Lewis hit layups to tie the score at 55 to set up the final possession.
The Lady Monarchs grabbed a 12-point lead at 45-33 on a three-point play from Tia Lewis, but James Madison stormed back with a 16-2 run to take a 49-47 lead with under eight minutes to play, holding ODU scoreless for nearly seven minutes.
Lewis gave ODU the lead back with a jumper but the Dukes took the lead right back with a jumper from Hislop.
Old Dominion pushed its lead to 14 with six quick second half points from Mairi Buchan, Jackie Cook and Ashley Betz-White, but JMU quickly cut the lead to nine with a three-pointer from Burkholder but Tia Lewis grabbed an offensive rebound, hit a layup and foul shot to give ODU at 12-point lead at 45-33.
ODU got off to a solid start early, going on a 10-2 run to take a 14-6 lead just four minutes into the contest. Cook and JoNiquia Guilford each had four points to spur the run. Kirby Burkholder hit a three to stop the run but Guilford countered right back with another three-pointer.
The Lady Monarchs scored the next five-straight on a Guilford three and Myeisha Hall layup before JMU put together a quick 6-0 spurt to cut the lead to four but baskets by Buchan and Guilford put ODU back on top by eight 26-18.
James Madison cut the lead to five with another three from Burkholder, but ODU pushed the lead to 11, its largest of the half with a quick 8-2 run, sparked from a three-pointer by Buchan.
Burkholder hit her fourth three-pointer of the first half to cut the lead down to eight but Guilford hit a driving layup with 12 seconds to go to end the half to give ODU a 36-26 halftime advantage.
Lewis led ODU with her eighth double-double of the season, with 17 points and 10 rebounds. Buchan finished with 10 points and tied her career-high with nine boards. Jackie Cook chipped in nine points and 10 rebounds while Betz-White pulled down a career-best nine rebounds.
The 59 rebounds is a season-high and the plus 21 margin is also a season-high.
Burkholder led the Dukes with 20 points, 14 of those in the first half while Jasmine Gill added 14 points.
Old Dominion heads back on the road to begin a three-game road stretch, as they travel to Hofstra on Sunday for a 2 p.m. tip.
