Women Sweep, Men Take Two of Three at Quad Meet

WEST POINT, N.Y. -- The Old Dominion women's swimming & diving team swept the competition, while the Old Dominion men's swimming & diving squad took two of three at Saturday's quad meet hosted by Army at Crandall Pool.

The Lady Monarchs picked up a 221-72 win over American, a 180-120 victory over CAA rival George Mason, and a 194-106 win over host Army to improve to 7-5 on the year.

The Monarchs earned a 221-80 victory over American and a 159.50-138.50 victory against the conference rival Patriots, but fell to Army, 132-166. The ODU men now stand at 7-2 on the season.

The ODU women took home seven events led by freshman Yesim Giresunlu (Istanbul, Turkey) in the distance events. Giresunlu clocked in with the top times in 1650 freestyle (17:18.21) and 500 freestyle (5:06.26).

Also in the freestyle events, freshman Savannah Bowers (Va. Beach, Va.) led the Lady Monarchs to a first place time in the 200 freestyle (1:55.07).

The Lady Monarchs swept the butterfly events. Junior Ashley Luchsinger (Va. Beach, Va.) gave ODU the victory in the 100 butterfly (57.86), while classmate Jessica Hubert (Newport News, Va.) hit the wall first in the 200 butterfly (2:06.63).

Other winners for the Lady Monarchs included junior Kimberley Rashleigh (Sydney, Australia) in the 200 backstroke (2:06.78) and the 400 medley relay team of Bowers, Luchsinger, senior Erla Haraldsdottir (Njardvik, Iceland), and senior Emma Forbes (Putnam Valley, N.Y.) with a time of 3:34.24.

In diving, senior Kelsey Thompson (Chesapeake, Va.) placed second on the 1 meter scoring 214.20 points, just .55 points shy of the top position.

The ODU men had six first place finishes led by senior and four-time CAA Swimmer of the Week Arni Arnason (Mosfellsbaer, Iceland) and sophomore Sidni Hoxha (Tirane, Albania).

Arnason once again had a trio of victories for the Monarchs with top times in the 100 breaststroke (55.45), 200 breaststroke (2:00.43), and 200 freestyle (1:39.07).

Hoxha meanwhile gave the Monarchs wins in the 50 freestyle (20.67) and 100 freestyle (45.76).

The 200 medley relay team consisting of senior Birkir Jonsson (Keflavik, Iceland), Arnason, Hoxha, and freshman Chadwick Smith (Va. Beach, Va.) also swam their way to a first place finish registering a time of 1:33.30.

The Monarch and Lady Monarch swimming & diving teams will host their final dual meet of the 2011-12 season hosting Towson on January 28 at 1:00 p.m. at the J.C. "Scrap" Chandler Pool in the Student Recreation Center. It will be senior day for the teams with Arni Arnason and Birkir Jonsson on the men's side and Kelsey Thompson, Madeline Stiles, Erla Haraldsdottir, and Emma Forbes on the women's side honored during the meet.
