NEW YORK - The Old Dominion men's and women's swimming and diving teams topped Montclair State and host NYU on Friday afternoon at the the Palladium Athletic Facility.
The ODU women lead their meet with 792 points followed by NYU with 649 and Montclair State in third with 416 points. The ODU men claimed first with 734.5 points with NYU in second with 690.5 points and Montclair State registering 340 points in third place.
The Lady Monarchs took home eight individual and a pair of relay victories led by a sophomore Laura Cemple (Mokena, Ill.) and senior Erla Haraldsdottir (Njardvik, Iceland). Cemple claimed victory in both the 500 freestyle (5:08.46) and 1000 freestyle (10:29.17). Haraldsdottir meanwhile hit the wall first in both the 100 butterfly (59.17) and 100 breaststroke (1:06.68).
Other first place finishers for the Lady Monarchs included junior Kimberley Rashleigh (Sydney, Austalia) in the 200 freestyle (1:56.51), freshman Yesim Giresunlu (Istanbul, Turkey) in the 200 individual medley (2:17.72), freshman Savannah Bowers (Va. Beach, Va.) in the 100 freestyle (54.49), and senior Emma Forbes (Putnam Valley, N.Y.) in the 100 backstroke (1:01.43).
In the relays, sophomore Molly Capes (Alpharetta, Ga.), freshman Giovanna Bodner (Pittsburg, Pa.), junior Ashley Luchsinger (Va. Beach, Va.), and Capes combined for a top time of 1:55.90 in the 200 medley relay. Sophomore Abby Vance (Raleigh, N.C.), senior Maddie Stiles (Fairfax, Va.), junior Jessica Hubert (Newport News, Va.), and Giresunlu gave the 400 free relay team a first place victory in a time of 3:44.42.
On the men's side, four-time Colonial Athletic Association Men's Swimmer of the Week Arni Arnason (Mosfellsbaer, Iceland) led the Monarchs with a trio of victories. He captured both the 50 freestyle (20.99) and 100 freestyle (46.23) in addition to the 100 breaststroke (55.31).
Other winners on the men's side included sophomore Dogus Akay (Izmir, Turkey) in the 1000 freestyle (9:58.97), sophomore Daniel Chalfont (Alexandria, Va.) in the 100 butterfly (53.04), and freshman Bernardo Figueredo (Brazil) in the 500 freestyle (4:47.21).
Both the ODU men's and women's swimming and diving squads return to the pool tomorrow, January 21, in a quad-meet with Army, American, and George Mason in West Point. Action begins at 1:00 p.m.
