NORFOLK, Va. - The Old Dominion swimming & diving teams spilt Saturday's meet with East Carolina at the J.C. "Scrap" Chandler Pool.
The Monarch men's swimming & diving squad improved to 5-1 on the year with a 165-127 victory over the Pirates. The Lady Monarch swimming & diving team meanwhile fell to 4-5 in dual meets this season with a 143-155 setback to the Pirates.
Senior Arni Arnason (Mosfellsbaer, Iceland) led the way for the men with three individual victories. He clocked in first in both the 100 breaststroke (54.41) and 200 breaststroke (2:00.46), as well as the 200 individual medley (1:51.43).
Sophomore Sidni Hoxha (Tirane, Albania) was also a multiple event winner for the Monarchs with top times in the sprint freestyle events. He won both the 50 freestyle (20.57) and 100 freestyle (46.47).
Sophomore Daniel Camozzo (Herndon, Va.) also added the Monarch total in winning the 200 freestyle (1:43.78), while in the distance events classmate James Cook (Lynchburg, Va.) took the top time in 500 freestyle (4:43.81) and freshman Bernardo Figueredo (Brazil) hit the wall first in the 1000 freestyle (9:35.76).
Additionally, sophomore Andrew Crockett (Toano, Va.) had first place time in the 100 backstroke (52.40).
In the relays for the men, Andrew Crockett, Arni Arnason, Sidni Hoxha, and freshman Chadwick Smith (Va. Beach, Va.) teamed together for a first place finish in a time of 1:32.20 in the 200 medley relay.
Junior Kimberley Rashleigh (Sydney, Australia), senior Erla Haraldsdottir (Njardvik, Iceland), junior Jessica Hubert (Newport News, Va.) and freshman Yesim Giresunlu (Istanbul, Turkey) were all multiple event winners for the Lady Monarchs in the loss.
Rashleigh led the way with three individual event wins in 100 backstroke (58.23), 200 backstroke (2:04.27), and 200 individual medley (2:07.86), while Harladsdottir collected the top times in the 100 breaststroke (1:04.34) and 200 breaststroke (2:21.24). Hubert added wins in both the 100 butterfly (57.36) and 200 butterfly (2:05.61) while Giresunlu paced the Lady Monarchs in the distance events with victories in 500 freestyle (5:02.28) and 1000 freestyle (10:12.22).
In the relays, Kimberley Rashleigh, Erla Haraldsdottir, junior Ashley Luchsinger (Va. Beach, Va.), and senior Emma Forbes (Putnam Valley, N.Y.) swam to a time 1:46.72 for a first place finish in the 200 medley relay.
The day's final event, the 400 yard freestyle determined the winner on the women's side with East Carolina edging out the Lady Monarchs by 1.35 seconds.
The Old Dominion men's and women's swimming & diving teams return to action next week taking on Montclair State and NYU on Friday, January 20th and Army, American, and George Mason in West Point on Saturday, January 21st.
