NORFOLK, Va. - Tia Lewis tied her career-high with 27 points while Mairi Buchan added a season-best 13 to lift Old Dominion University women's basketball to a 70-58 win over Wofford Wednesday night at the Ted Constant Center.
Old Dominion (2-8) grabbed the lead for good with 1:26 to go in the first half, ending the half on a 7-0 run and never looking back.
Early in the second half the Terriers cut the lead to the on a jumper from Rachel Brittenham, however the Lady Monarchs stormed right back with an 10-2 sparked with a steal and layup from Myeisha Hall, four points from Lewis, and buckets from JoNiquia Guilford and Mairi Buchan to push the lead back to 11.
Following that run, the Lady Monarchs pushed the lead to as much as 13 midway through the second half on a layup by Lewis but Wofford was able to get the score back to eight on a three-pointer from April Moorhouse, but the Lady Monarchs never let the Terriers get the lead under seven the rest of the way.
With four minutes left in the game, Wofford (6-2) cut the lead to seven again, but ODU pushed right back with four-straight points from Lewis and a pair of free throws from Ashley Betz-White to push the lead back to 12.
ODU took a quick 4-2 lead to start the game on two foul shots from Betz-White, but Wofford came back and opener up an 18-10 advantage with 10 minutes to go in the first half.
The Lady Monarchs went on an 11-1 run to take back the lead, as Jackie Cook started the spurt with a three-pointer with Lewis ending the run with a pair of free throws to give ODU a 21-19 advantage.
The rest of the half was back and forth until the Lady Monarchs took control in the last minute and a half.
Lewis tied her career-best of 27 points that she set earlier in the season in the win over Alabama in the Paradise Jam Tournament. Lewis, who scored 18 of her 27 in the second half, also pulled down eight rebounds and blocked two shots. Buchan added a season-high 13 points and tied her career-best with nine rebounds.
Hall chipped in with nine points and had three steals while Guilford had four points, four assists and six rebounds.
ODU held a 40-20 advantage with points in the paint while also contributing 24 points off the bench compared to just eight for Wofford. Buchan and Hall combined for 22 of those 24 points off the bench.
Wofford had three players in double-figures as Moorhouse and Brittenham had 14 apiece, while Daniella Motley had a double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds.
The victory marks the first home win for ODU head coach Karen Barefoot.
The Lady Monarchs are back in action Sunday, Dec. 18 when they host North Carolina A&T at the Ted Constant Center at 2 p.m.
