NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Old Dominion University women's basketball head coach Karen Barefoot visited with and was a guest speaker at An Achievable Dream Academy in Newport News last Friday.

An Achievable Dream is a unique partnership between Newport News Public Schools, the City of Newport News, and the local business community to give students who are at risk of failure in school due to socioeconomic factors, a chance to succeed.

"It was a true pleasure hearing Karen Barefoot speak to our students today with the topics of courage and staying positive," Tennis Director of Achievable Dream Academy, Judi Overbey said. "She is a shining example and models passion in all she undertakes, and in the spirit in which she does it."

"Students at Achievable Dream are reminded during the morning program every day by coach Judi Overbey, the importance of good character, working as a team and doing one's best. What a thrill it was for our students to have ODU women's basketball coach Karen Barefoot visit this past Friday and share her experiences while growing up playing basketball," Retired Executive Director of Achievable Dream schools, Richard Coleman said. "Although her theme was on courage, she talked about having character, working as a team and doing your best. Coach Barefoot, who once worked at Achievable Dream, was a great inspiration for all of us on Friday morning."

Barefoot, who had worked previously at An Achievable Dream as the Tennis Director, spoke to the students about courage and having character.
