Vermont Edges Monarchs, 65-63 In Overtime

NORFOLK, VA-- Four McGlynn hit three of four free throws in the last 17 seconds to lift Vermont (3-2) to a 65-63 overtime win over Old Dominion (3-3) Wednesday night at the Ted Constant Convocation Center despite a a career high 24 points and 10 rebounds from Nick Wright (Suffolk, Va.).

Wright hit nine-for-12 from the field along with three bocked shots in 39 minutesof play.

Vermont led the nation with the most road wins (22) the last two seasons.

ODU tied the game on Wright's two free throws with five seconds left in regulation, then stopped the Catamounts with a steal as time ran out to force ODU's second overtime in the last three games after not playing any extra periods last year.

The Monarchs led by as many as 12 (36-24) with 16:30 left in the second half, but Vermont slowly rallied and took the lead, 46-45 with 7:50 left on a jumper by Matt Glass. Nick Wright tied it with a free throw at 46-46,t he put ODU up 48-46 with 6:54 remaining.

The Monarchs held on to the lead until Glass hit a jumper with 2:41 left in regulation for a 54-53 Vermont lead, then Sandro Carissimo hit a three-pointer to put them up four at 57-53 with 1:27 left before the Monarchs would rally to tie the game and send it to overtime.

In the extra period, Brendan Bald hit a jumper to put Vermont up 62-60,but ODU cut it to one after freshman Jason Pimentel (Ocala, FL.) hit one of two free throws.

Four McGlynn hit two free throws to make it 64-61 with 17 seconds left, followed by a Nick Wright layup with 11 seconds remaining. McGlynn hit one of two free throws with nine seconds left, but Brian Voelkel stole the ball, but he then missed two free throws which gave the Monarchs another shot with three seconds left. Senior Trian Iliadis' long trey attempt missed to end the game.

Luke Apfeld came off the bench to lead Vermont with 15 points, while Matt Glass scored 14 and Ben Crenca had 10. Apfeld was six of eight from the floor.

The Cats outrebounded ODU, 48-37 as Brian Voelkel hauled down 14 and five other Vermont players had atleast five boards each.

Besides Wright's career high 24 points and 10 boards, Kent Bazemore (Kelford, NC.) added 14 before fouling out with three seconds left in the overtime period. The Monarchs 6-9 Chris Cooper (Dumfries,VA.) was saddled with foul trouble and played only 18 minutes with seven points and eight rebounds. Trian Iliadis led with four assists, while Bazemore and Marquel De Lancey (Alexandria, VA.) had three assists each.

Vermont shot .397 (23-58) from the floor to ODU.338 (22-65). The Monarchs committed only seven turnovers to the Cats 18.

The Monarchs return to action next Tuesday when they host East Carolina at 7 p.m. in the Constant Center.
