Lady Monarchs Drop 78-63 Decision to Richmond

NORFOLK, Va. - Richmond went on double-digit runs to begin both the first and second half and Old Dominion University women's basketball could never come all the way back, falling 78-63 Sunday evening at the Ted Constant Center.

ODU scored the first points of the second half to cut the lead to four at 36-32, but Richmond scored the next eight points to take a 44-32 lead. Tia Lewis stopped the run with a free throw.

Richmond pushed the lead to their biggest of the day at 66-45, but ODU countered with a 9-0 run to cut the lead to 66-54 with four minutes to play on a pair of free throws from Ashley Betz-White.

That was the closest the Lady Monarchs would get as Richmond pushed the lead back to 17 on a three-pointer from Abby Oliver.

Richmond got the scoring started with a layup from Miah Registar, ODU tied the score on a pair of free throws from Tia Lewis, but the Spiders went on a 15-0 to take a 17-2 lead three minutes into the contest.

Rachael Bilney had seven points during the stretch, which was broke on a layup from Lewis.

ODU went on a 19-7 run the final seven minutes to cut the halftime score to 36-30. Mairi Buchan and Tia Lewis each finished the half with seven points for the Lady Monarchs.

Oliver led the way for Richmond, scoring a game-high 22 points and pulling down seven boards. Rachael Bilney had 14 points while Genevieve Okoro chipped in 10.

Tia Lewis had 16 points and a game-high eight rebounds for the Lady Monarchs while Betz-White led the team with 18 points.

ODU is back in action Wednesday when they compete in the Paradise Jam Tournament in the Virgin Islands.

With 22 points, Abby Oliver eclipsed the 1,000 point mark for her career, she now has 1,017 points.

Lewis tied a season-high with eight rebounds while Shakeva Richards had a season-high six boards.
