DULUTH, Ga. - Georgia Tech stretched its lead to 20 points in the second half and never looked back en route to a 87-56 win over Old Dominion University women's basketball Sunday afternoon at the Arena at Gwinnett Center.
Old Dominion (0-2) went on a 10-2 run to end the first half, but the Yellow Jackets came out to start the second half on a 9-2 run and never looked back.
Georgia Tech stretched the lead to 48-30 early in the second half. Metra Walthour knocked in the Yellow Jackets first three of the game and Mo Bennett scored a layup to start the run.
The Yellow Jackets extended their lead to more than 20, going on a 12-1 run to take a 53-31 lead.
GT improved its lead to as much as 30 midway through the second half and continued throughout the rest of the half.
Georgia Tech scored the first five points of the game before ODU took its only lead of the game on a three-pointer by JoNiquia Guilford at 8-7.
After the Lady Monarchs took the lead, Georgia Tech went on a 9-0 run capped by a three-pointer from Sydney Wallace to take a 16-8 advantage. ODU broke the run on a jumper by Tia Lewis.
ODU closed the gap to 16-12 on a jumper from Lewis and a pair of free throws by Mairi Buchan, but the Yellow Jackets came right back with a 15-2 run to take a 31-14 with three minutes remaining in the half.
The Lady Monarchs closed the gap to end the half, going on a 10-2 run the over the last two minutes. Shakeva Richards sparked the rally with a layup and a three-pointer, with Mairi Buchan adding a layup and Becca Allison nailed a running three-pointer as the half expired to cut the deficit to 33-24.
Shakeva Richards led the way for the Lady Monarchs with a career-high 16 points, while Mairi Buchan chipped in seven points and nine rebounds while Tia Lewis added nine points and six boards. Becca Allison also finished the day with nine points.
Tyaunna Marshal and Sasha Goodlett led four Yellow Jackets with 17 points, while Dawn Maye had 14 with Sydney Wallace adding 12 points.
The Lady Monarchs return to action November 17 as they head out west to Stanford for a 10 p.m. start.
Notes
Richards and Allison both scored career-highs for ODU, with Richards' 16 and Allison's nine ... The last time ODU beat an ACC team on the road was in 2000, a 91-77 win at North Carolina.
