NORFOLK, Va. - Monet Tellier scored a game-high 29 points as Virginia Tech went on a 18-2 run to end the first half and hung on for a 77-65 win over Old Dominion University women's basketball Friday night at the Ted Constant Center.

Old Dominion (0-1) cut Virginia Tech's second half lead to eight at 63-55 on a free-throw from Ashley Betz-White and to seven on another foul shot by Lewis, but could get no closer as Virginia Tech (1-0) increased the lead back to 12 on a jumper by Tellier.

Betz-White started in her first career game and led ODU with 22 points, shooting 7-of-12 from the field and 5-of-8 from beyond the arc. She made her first five shots of the game, including three treys.

ODU cut the lead to eight on a layup by Tia Lewis at 66-58 but a pair of free throws by Tellier again made it a 10-point game.

The Lady Monarchs came out strong in the second half, getting back into the game on a 12-4 run to open the second half and cut the gap to 51-44.

Virginia Tech came right back with seven-straight of their own to pull back to a 14-point lead at 58-44.

Virginia Tech came out scoring the first six points before Tia Lewis got ODU's first two points of the season. The Lady Monarchs tied the score at 15 on one of four first half three-pointers by Betz-White and took the lead at 22-20 on another three from Betz-White.

ODU grabbed its biggest lead of the first half at 27-22 on a jumper by Lewis and a free throw from Myeisha Hall. ODU kept its lead at 30-29 on foul shot from Becca Allison but the Hokies followed with a 18-2 run to end the first half and take a 47-32 lead heading into the break.

Tellier added nine rebounds to go along with her 29 points while Aerial Wilson added 16 points and Alyssa Fenyn chipped in 15.

Betz-White finished with four assists and Tia Lewis had 18 points and eight boards for ODU. Mairi Buchan had nine points and five rebounds.

The Lady Monarchs hit the road for their first away contest of the season on Sunday, Nov. 13 at Georgia Tech. ODU takes on the Yellow Jackets at 2 p.m.
