NORFOLK, Va. -- Old Dominion freshmen quarterback Taylor Heinicke (Atlanta, Ga.) was named the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Football's Rookie of the Week it was announced Monday morning by the conference office.
The true freshman signal caller helped lead his Old Dominion football squad to its first Top Ten victory in school history with a 23-20 victory over #9/10 James Madison. Heinicke was named the Oyster Most Valuable Player after passing for 236 yards and two touchdowns and was the Monarchs' leading rusher with 50 yards on 11 carries. The Atlanta, Georgia native connected with Larry Pinkard twice - first on a 17-yard pass to open up scoring and the second a 23-yard pass after scrambling well behind the line of scrimmage on fourth and two and lofting the ball to Pinkard near the end line of the endzone in the second quarter.
Since taking over at quarterback halfway through the Monarchs' game with UMass five games ago, Heinicke has passed for 1124 yards completing 101 of his 147 attempts with just one interception (Towson).
This is Heinicke's second CAA Rookie of the Week award. He also earned the accolade on October 3rd after the Monarchs victory over UMass, where Heinicke played the entire second half throwing for 119 yards and two touchdowns.
