NORFOLK, VA-- The ODU Soccer Monarchs (5-2/1-1) continue its home stand with a Wednesday night match against the Rams of VCU (6-4/1-1) at 7 p.m.in he ODU Soccer Complex.The contest will again be videostreamed live on ODU Monarch Media All Access with the Director of Broadcasting Ted Alexander providing the play-by-play and former ODU All-American Jimmy Tanner ('00) as the color analyst.
ODU currently ranks 19th by TopDrawerSoccer and 21st by both the NSCAA and College Soccer News. ODU is fourth in the NSCAA Regional rankings. SoccerAmerica ranks ODU 25th.
The Monarch got back on the winning track with a 2-0 victory over Delaware Saturday night on goals from Tim Hopkinson and Gideon Asante.
ODU currently ranks third in the CAA in total points with 51, a 2.57 goals per gameaverage and 15 assists throught seven matches.
Junior Yannick Smith is tied for second in the league with six goals and is fourth in total points with 13. Gideon Asante is tied for seventh with four goals and sixth with 11 total points. Tim Hopkinson is ninth in the CAA with nine total points.
The Monarchs have four players with three assists each in Hopkinson, Asante, Chris Harmon and freshman Ivan Militar who rank eighth in the CAA.
Between the pipes, goalkeeper Victor Francoz is seventh with a 1.03 goals againstaverage, second in the CAA with a .837 save percentage, and fourth in shutouts withthree.
THE SERIES VS. VCU- ODU leads, 22-8-5. Last year, the two teams played to a 1-1tie and in 2009, ODU won 2-1 in overtime in a match where the Monarchs tied the match with five second left, then won it two minutes into the first extra period.
The Rams also got back on the winning track with a 1-0 win over 18th ranked George Mason, ending a four-game losing streak.
VCU is second in the CAA with 19 goals scored thus farand second with 18 assists and 51 total points.
Sophomore forward Jason Johnson leads VCU with five goals, followed by junior forward Yoram Mwila with four goals. Freshman midfielder Charlie Ahn leads the team with four assists and is tied for the CAA lead in that department.
Senior goalkeeper Josh Pantazelos has four shutouts with a 0.88 goals againstaverage for the Rams. He ranks fourth in the CAA in Goals against average and third in saves.
