Soccer Monarchs Crack Nation's Top 10

NORFOLK, VA-- The ODU Soccer Monarchs (11-2/7-1), winners of seven straight games cracked the nation's top 10 for the first time since 2006 at number seven by TopDrawerSoccer and a number eight ranking by the NSCAA and College Soccer News.

ODU sophomore forward Tim Hopkinson (Nottingham, England) garnered national honors as he was named to the national teams of the week as chosen by College Soccer News and TopDrawerSoccer after recording a game-winning overtime goal at Georgia State and three assists in a win over Hofstra last week. Hopkinson now has eight goals and seven assists for 23total points which ranks second on the team, and third in the CAA.

The Monarchs hit the road Wednesday night for a match against 17th/21st ranked James Madison (11-2-1/7-1) as the CAA's top two teams tied for first place meet at 7 p.m. in Harrisonburg, Va.

Previously ODU had been ranked in the nation's top ten in 1981, 1991, 2003, 04, 05, and 06 with the highest ranking ever on Oct. 6, 2003 at number two.

In other CAA statistics, junior Yannick Smith (hillsborough, NJ.)leads the CAA in total points (32), points per game (2.46) and goals (15). Gideon Asante (Sunyani, Ghana) leads the CAA in assists with nine while Hopkinson is second with seven and freshman Ivan Militar (Szeged,Hungary) is seventh with five. Hopkinson (4) and Smith (3) are also in the top two of the CAA in game winning goals.

As a team, ODU leads the CAA with 39 goals which is 3.0 per game while giving up just 14. Monarch head coach Alan Dawson is one win shy of 300 for his collegiatecareer (299-121-35). The four-time CAA Coach of the Year is in his 24th season as a collegiate head coach and 15th at ODU.

In the latest NCAA statistics, ODU leads the nation in scorin at 3.0 goals per game and are second nationally in total goals with 39. Yannick Smith ranks third nationally at 2.46 per game and leads the nation with 1.15 goals per game. GideonAsante leads the nation with a 0.69 assist per game average.
