CHARLESTON, S.C. - Old Dominion University women's soccer looks to keep the momentum from their first win of the season into this weekend as they head to Charleston, S.C. to compete in the College of Charleston Cup.
ODU will take on Coastal Carolina Friday, Sept. 9 at 5 p.m. before taking on tournament host CofC Sunday at 2:30 p.m.
The Lady Monarchs are coming off an impressive 3-1 win this past Sunday over Arizona State. ODU got first half goals from Amber Cook, Lisa Bernardini and Taylor Smith. For Cook and Smith it was their first goals of the season, and for Smith, the first of her career.
ODU put together a solid defensive effort as well, goalkeeper Brianna Alvarado made seven saves, while back line players Tori Diersen, Rachael Carroll, Cook and Taylor Mertz put together a solid performance.
Old Dominion will face The Chanticleers on Friday. CCU is 0-4-1 so far this season. The two teams have no common opponents. Christina Stern leads the Chanticleers' attack with two goals. Saundra Baron has logged every minute in goal, stopping 21 shots.
ODU takes on CofC Sunday. The Cougars sport a 3-2 mark, with wins over Charleston Southern, Winthrop and Murray State. Sarah Schaidle leads the squad with five points on two goals and an assist. Cricket Wise has started every game in goal, making 20 saves.
ODU returns home on Sept. 18 when they host Radford at 1 p.m. The contest will be "Fan Appreciation Day", as the first 250 fans will receive free food and ODU soccer sunglasses.
