No. 1 ODU Blanks Richmond; Off To Best Start Since 1992

RICHMOND, Va. - For the first time since 1992 the Old Dominion field hockey team sits undefeated after 11 games. The top-ranked Lady Monarchs moved to 11-0 with a 2-0 shutout on the road at Richmond Friday afternoon.

ODU last won 11 straight to begin a season in 1992 when the Lady Monarchs went 25-0 and won the NCAA Championship.

Richmond (5-5) hung tough in the first half, not allowing a goal. It was only the third period all season in which the Lady Monarchs failed to find the back of the cage.

Old Dominion came out strong in the second stanza though, breaking the tie in the 37th minute on a Rebecca Condie tally from Lydia Velzian. The Lady Monarchs would then cushion their lead in the 53rd minute on Danielle Clutter's second goal of the season off a feed from Christy Longacre.

Old Dominion held a 12-3 advantage in shots and a 7-1 edge in penalty corners.The shutout is ODU's fourth of the season and the three shots allowed ties a season-best for the Lady Monarch defense.

ODU returns to Colonial Athletic Association play Sunday at 1 p.m. at Delaware.
