ELON, NC--Old Dominion's Junior forward Yannick Smith's (Hillsborough, NJ.) golden goal three minutes into the first sudden death overtime period lifted 11th ranked Old Dominion to a 3-2 victory over Elon Saturday night. The Monarchs are 4-0 on the season, Elon which had won two straight drops to 2-4-1.
"Our team showed great character in overtime after Elon tied the game with only 1:22 left. This was a great win on the road as we continue to grow as a team." - ODU head coach Alan Dawson.
The Monarchs took a 2-0 lead on a first half goal from Gideon Asante (Sunyani, Ghana) from 13 yards out and then Yannick Smith early in the second half scored off a rebound shot.
Elon cut it to 2-1 as James Carroll scored off a cleared corner from about 15 yards. With 1:21 left in the match Tommy Allen put in the equalizer to send the game into overtime.
In the extra frame, Smith got a pass form junior Chris Harmon (Downingtown, PA.) left side of the box and shoots past the defender for the winning goal. Smith now leads the team with six goals, including two multiple goal games thus far this season.
Elon outshot the Monarchs, 19-11 but shots on goal were even at 8-8. ODU junior goal keeper Victor Francoz (Fleurieu Sur Saone, France) made five saves on the night as did Elon's Reed Dillard.
The Monarchs return to action next Saturday for its opening CAA match against George Mason in Fairfax,VA. at 7 p.m. This will be the second of a three-game road swing.
