NORFOLK, VA-- The 22nd ranked Old Dominion Soccer Monarchs(3-0) defeated 13th ranked Monmouth( 3-1) today 3-1 to take the title of the 36th annual Stihl Soccer Classic. ODU got goals from Yannick Smith (Hillsborough, NJ.) and Tim Hopkinson (Nottingham,England) and assists from Gideon Asante (Sunyani, Ghana) and Chris Harmon (Downingtown, PA.).

In the early match 19th ranked East Tennessee State defeated No. 16 William and Mary, 2-0.

Four Monarchs, Jordan LeBlanc (Haverford, PA.), Alex DeJohn (Marlboro, NJ.),keeper Victor Francoz (Fleurieu Sur Saone, France) and Tim Hopkinson were named to the All-Tournament team with LeBlanc being named Tournament MVP.

"I'm pleased. I felt we could have scored a few more goals, but at the end of the day just getting the win, plus scoring three goals was good. " said head coach Alan Dawson. I thought we created a lot of chances in the second half, and we were rewarded with a penalty kick." Jordan LeBlanc is Mr. consistent. He completes all his passes. He just does the right things. "

ODU scored twice in the first half as Yannick Smith got a deflected pass from Gideon Asante midwayin the first half to give the Monarchs a 1-0 lead. After an OWN goal, the Monarchs took a 2-0 lead intohalftime.

Monmouth cut the lead, 2-1 early in the second half as Matt Beverin scored on assists from Kalie Sotka and Joseph Schmid.

12 minutes later, ODU got a little more breathing room when senior Chris Harmon cut around the Monmouth defense then dribbled down the end line and fed Hopkinson in front of the net for a 3-1 lead. ODU had one other scoring opportunity with a penalty kick, but Chris Harmon's shot was stoppedby the Hawks Alex Blackburn.

ODU outshot Monmouth, 13-11 and 7-6 in shots on goals, while the Monarchs keeper Francoz had fiveSaves, as well help from the rest of his defense anchored by senior Tommy Webb.

The Monarchs return to action next Saturday night at Elon.

In the earlier match, ETSU got goals from Simon Schroettle and Frank Doumbe to defeat William and Mary, 2-0.
