NORFOLK, VA--Sophomore midfielder Gideon Asante (Sunyani, Ghana) scored two goals, one in each half to lead the Monarchs of Old Dominion to a 2-0 pre-season exhibition win over Virginia Tech. ODU is pre-season ranked 26th nationally by College Soccer News.
Asante's first goal came six minutes into the match on an assist from junior forward Jordan LeBlanc (Haverford, PA.) as he broke free from about eight yards out.
Asante, last year's freshman All-American and All-CAA selection's second goal came after a failed Virginia Tech clear where he picked off the pass, beat the defenderand shot it pass the keeper.
ODU dominated the match, outshooting the Hokies, 17-6 overall and 8-2 in shots on goal. The Monarchs used two keepers, Michael Roura (Middletown, NJ.) and Victor Francoz (Fleurieu Sur Saone, France). Both had a save each.
Asante led ODU with six shots, while Tim Hopkinson and Jordan LeBlanc each had threeshot attempts.
The Monarchs return to action when they travel to Washington, DC for an exhibition match against George Washington, Sunday at 5 p.m. ODU opens the regular season on Aug. 28 at 7 p.m. when they host Navy.
