CAA Leading ODU Rallies For 7-5 Win Over UNCW

NORFOLK, VA--Old Dominion (26-21/18-8) got back-to-back RBI doubles from freshman Joey Burney (Gloucester, VA.) and senior Nate Hartman (Orlando, FL.) along with an RBI single from Kenny Stoneback (Colonial Heights, VA.) in the eighth inning for a come-from behind 7-5 victory over UNC Wilmington (27-24/15-11) Saturday afternoon.

ODU remains alone in first place in the CAA one game ahead of James Madison who defeated Towson, 7-3 today, and the Monarchs have won eight straight CAA series in a row.

The Seahawks took a 5-4 lead in the seventh inning on a sacrifice fly RBI by Andrew Cain with scoredMatt Campbell.

With one out in the eighth, Joey Burney then doubled to rightcenter and Sizemore scored from first to tie the game at 5-5. Nate Hartman then doubled down the line which scored pinch runner Drew Coker (Chester, VA. ) to put ODU up 6-5. Kenny Stoneback then finished the scoring with a single which plated Hartman for the 7-5 lead.

In the bottom of the ninth senior Adam Wisniewski (Norfolk, Va. ) came on to pick up his CAA best 13th save of the year with two strikeouts. The victory goes to junior reliever Louis Singleton (Norfolk, Va.) who pitched a scoreless eighth inning. The 13 saves by Wisniewski ties the ODU single season mark set in 1990 by Mike Grohs.

Three Monarchs had two hits on the day led by shortstop junior Joey Burney each had two hits as well.

UNCW was led by Matt Campbell, Thomas Pope and David Shambley with two hits each. Pope leads theCAA in hitting at .418.

The third and final game of the series is Sunday at 2 p.m. ODU will honor its five seniors ( Kyle Hald, Nathan Hartman, Joe Haumacher, Edgar Hernandez and Adam Wisniewski) prior to the game.
