NORFOLK, Va. - After 20 successful years as Faculty Athletic Representative at Old Dominion University, Dr. Janis Sanchez-Hucles is stepping down from the position. English professor Tim Seibles will take over the position.
During her tenure at ODU, Sanchez-Hucles oversaw committees, sat in CAA and NCAA meetings and was a key contact between the faculty and the athletics department.
"I was able to sit in on some very interesting meetings and it was often my job to speak to the entire assembly when we were trying to support different legislation," Sanchez-Hucles said. "This was often an opportunity to meet with individuals who were thinking about applying to ODU or to talk to those who used to work at Old Dominion."
During her term, Sanchez-Hucles was the chair of the University Athletic Committee (UAC). The group is composed of faculty, staff and students, including two members, Judy Bowman and Rick Kiefner, who have been on the committee Sanchez-Hucles' entire 20 years. The UAC focused on staying informed in athletics, not just at ODU, but nationally as well. The UAC is also involved in developing policies on campus.
"We have tried to develop a policy that works with faculty and student-athletes when they must miss class. We have supported the growth of the Monarch Maniacs and receive regular reports on the athletic teams," Sanchez-Hucles said. "Of special importance is reviewing academic progress of teams twice and year and having follow up visits with coaches."
Sanchez-Hucles enjoyed her 20 years in her role and had nothing but positive thins to say about her colleagues in athletics.
"It was a wonderful job to get to know coaches, student-athletes, administrators and faculty better through meetings, athletic contests and receptions," Sanchez-Hucles said. "It has been a great job and I know that Tim Seibles will be a wonderful leader for this great team."
