Lady Monarchs Hang Around, but Fall to No. 7 Virginia 9-5

NORFOLK, Va. - Old Dominion University women's lacrosse stayed close to No. 7 Virginia all night, but dropped a 9-5 decision to Virginia Wednesday night at the Powhatan Sports Complex.

Virginia built up a 4-1 lead in the games first seven minutes but Tracy Reed got ODU within two with a goal off an assist from Lisa Bernardini to make the score 4-2.

Josie Owens and Caroline McTiernan tallied their second goals of the game to give Virginia a 6-2 lead going into halftime.

ODU came out of the second half ready to play with an unassisted goal by Rebecca Harturm to close the gap to 6-3.

After a UVA goal, Alyssa Dragon once ago brough ODU to within three with a goal as she brought the ball down the right side and beat the Virginia keeper for the goal.

The Cavaliers were able to bounce back with two more goals to stretch the lead to 9-4 with five minutes to play.

Hartrum got ODU to within 9-5 just 28 seconds later as she charged down the left side and beat the goalie to the top left, but it would not be enough as UVA got the 9-5 win.

Hartrum led ODU with two goals while Bernardini added a goal and an assist.

Dana Boyle led UVA with three goals while Julie Gardner had a goal and three assists.

Sarah Geary made seven saves in goal for ODU while Kim Kolarik had seven stops for UVA.

The Lady Monarchs are back in action Sunday afternoon when they head to North Carolina for a 1 p.m. contest.
