NORFOLK, VA--Edgar Hernandez (Luquillo, PR) RBI single knocked in Shawn Sizemore in the sixth inning to break a 4-4 tie andlead the Monarchs to an 8-4 Colonial Athletic Association victory over Northeastern Sunday afternoon at the Bud Metheny Baseball Complex.The Monarchs take the series and are now 10-12 overall and 3-3 in the CAA.
Junior righthander Phil McCarthy (Chesapeake, Va.) picked up his second win of the season with reliefhelp from freshman Dean Ali (Chesapeake, VA.) and senior Adam Wisniewski (Norfolk, VA.).
The game was tied 4-4 in the sixth when ODU scored three runs. After Hernandez knocked in Sizemorethirdbaseman Brent Frazier (Fairfax Station, VA.) singled home both Hernandez and Kenny Stoneback (Colonial Heights, VA.) togive the Monarchs a 7-4 lead. Frazier then singled home Nate Hartman (Orlando, FL.) in the eighth for the final margin of 8-4.
Frazier knocked in three runs on the day, while shortstop Josh Wright had three hits and knocked intwo runs. Wright put ODU up early, 2-0 in the first with a two-run homer to left with freshmanBrian Bashara (Norfolk, Va.) aboard. It was Wright's fourth homer of the season. Sizemore also had two hits on the day for ODU.
Northeastern was led by Alan Pastyrnak with three hits, and Jon Leroux with two hits and two runsBatted in.
The Monarchs return to action Tuesday night at 6 p.m. at the Bud Metheny Complex against Richmond.
