Hartman Homers In Monarchs 7-4 Loss To Northeastern

NORFOLK, VA-- Jimmy Filter knocked in three runs and Chris Carmain pitched two-plusinnings of shutout relief to lead the Huskies of Northeastern (3-12/1-3) to a 7-4 Colonial AthleticAssociation win over Old Dominion (8-12/1-3) Friday night at the Bud Metheny Baseball Complex.

Trailing, 2-0 in the bottom of the fourth, ODU's Joey Burney (Gloucester, VA.) singled home Shawn Sizemore (Newport News, VA.), thenrightfielder Nathan Hartman (Orlando, FL.) slammed his second home run of the season over rightfield to put ODU ahead 3-2.

Filter then tied the game up with an RBI single which scored Matt Miller. The Huskies re-tookthe lead in the sixth as Jon Leroux scored from third on a wild pitch. Aaron Barbosa made it5-3 when he stole third, then came home on the throwing error.

The Monarchs cut it to 5-4 in the bottom of the seventh as Josh Wright (Bridgewater, VA.) walked with the basesloaded to force home fellow Bridgewater, VA. native Josh Tutwiler, but Carmain pitchedout of the jam. Filter then knocked in two runs with the bases loaded in the top of the ninth to make it 7-4.

Hartman led ODU with two hits on night, while Joey Burney and JoshTutwiler each had one hit. ODU senior lefthander Kyle Hald (Springfield, VA.), the reigning and current CAA strikeoutleader pitched seven innings with seven strike outs, and three walks.

Northeastern reliever Les Carmain walked two and fanned four in picking up his first save of theYear, and the first win of the year for starter Les Williams. The two teams play again Saturday at 4 p.m. and on Sunday at 1 p.m.
