WILLIAMSBURG, VA-- Senior Frank Hassell scored 21points with 11 rebounds, while Kent Bazemore added 14 points and a career high 12 boards along with senior Keyon Carter 12 points off the bench to lead the Monarchs of ODU to a 69-53 victory over the Tribe of William and Mary Wednesday night.
For the 6-9 Hassell, it was his ninth double-double of the season. The Chesapeake,VA. native also blocked two shots and dished out three assists. He is now averaging13.4 points and 9.4 rebounds per game.
The Monarchs (19-6, 10-4 Colonial Athletic Association) led 33-25 at halftime after shooting 46.4 percent from the floor (13 of 28) in the opening half. Old Dominion started the second half on a 21-7 run, taking its largest lead, 54-32, with 9:37 left to play. The Monarchs tough defense held W&M only to just seven points the first seven minutes of the second half.
The Monarchs dominated the boards, 44-21 and held the Tribe to just one offensiverebound for the game, while ODU had 14 and got 21 second chance points. Senior BenFinney joined Hassell and Bazemore in the rebound parade as he pulled down seven boards and dished out four assists. Quinn McDowell led W&Mwith five boards.
ODU finished the night shooting .452 (28-62) from the field, while W&M was just.386 (17-44). The Tribe did hit 12 of 27 treys led by Julian Boatner who wasfive-of six and finished with 15 points.
Bazemore, the CAA's leader in steals came up with three more on the night as didTrian Iliadis. Bazemore is now averaging 2.3 per game with a total of 57 which rankedhim 25th nationally coming into the week.
The victory was ODU's sixth straight at W&M Hall and sixth straight over theTribe. The Monarchs have also won five of their last six games.
ODU returns to action for their third straight road game on Saturday when theytake on VCU at 2 p.m. on ESPN2.
