Women's Lacrosse Opens Season with 12-7 Setback at Louisville

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Old Dominion University women's lacrosse fell at Louisville in the season-opener 12-7 Monday afternoon at UofL Stadium.

Old Dominion (0-1) cut Louisville's lead to 9-7 with nine minutes to play in the second half on Lisa Bernardini's third goal of the game. Louisville responded with two goals just a minute a part to push its lead to 11-7 and added an insurance goal with three minutes to play.

Louisville (2-0) got on the board just 19 seconds into the contest with a free position shot goal by Emily Dashiell. The Cardinal made it 2-0 less than a minute later with an unassisted goal by Bergan Foley.

The Lady Monarchs fought back, cutting the deficit in half with Alyssa Dragon's first career goal off an assist from Sarah Wright. Bernardini tied the score at two with an unassisted goal with 10 minutes remaining in the first half.

The Cardinal scored three-straight goals to push the lead to 5-2, but Wright scored her first goal of the year off a pass from Meredith Rogers. Dashiell scored on another free position shot to give Louisville a 6-3 halftime lead.

ODU opened second half scoring with Rogers adding an unassisted goal to make the score 6-4, but Foley scored two goals in 48 seconds to give Louisville an 8-4 advantage.

ODU continued to fight back, adding two quick goals from Bernardini and Rebecca Hartrum, both on free position shots to make the score 8-6.

Following a Louisville goal to make it a three-goal lead, Bernardini added her third goal of the game to once again cut the lead to two.

This time Louisville pulled away as they scored three times in the final seven minutes.

Bernardini led ODU with three goals while Wright and Rogers each recorded a goal and an assist.

Foley led the Cardinal with seven goals, while Katie Oliverio had a goal and four assists.

Sarah Geary recorded 11 saves in goal for ODU while Ashley Herbst made eight stops for Louisville.

Old Dominion hosts their home opener on Saturday, March 5 when they host American at 1 p.m.
