Hassell And Bazemore Lead Monarchs Over JMU, 75-59

HARRISONBURG, VA-- Frank Hassell scored 21 points, and Kent Bazemore added 19 tolead the Monarchs (23-6/13-4) of Old Dominion to a 75-59 Colonial Athletic Association win over James Madison Thursday night on ESPNU.

Senior guard Darius James added 11 points, dished out six assists and committedno turnovers. As a team, The Monarchs committed only six turnovers, while the Dukes turned it over 13 times.

JMU led by six, 17-11 with 10:06 left in the first half, but ODU went on an 11-0run to take a 22-17 lead after a basket by Kent Bazemore with 5:45 left. The Dukeshad a chance to re-take the lead with ODU up 26-25 with 19 seconds left, but KentBazemore picked-off one of his game high three steals, then hit a three-pointer togive the Monarchs a 29-25 halftime lead.

In the second half, ODU's defense and timely scoring took charge and the Monarchsled by as 21, 64-43 with 6:42 left in the contest. ODU shot (.536) from the floorin the second half and hit 14-16 from the free throw line for the game.

Frank Hassell was 9-12 from the floor, Kent Bazemore was 6-8 and Darius James was5-10 from the field.

ODU outrebounded the Dukes 30-23 after the two were dead even at halftime (15-15).The Monarchs held JMU to just three offensive rebounds. In three of the last fiveopponents (W&M, VCU and JMU), the Monarchs have held to five offensive rebounds or less.

Frank Hassell again led the Monarchs rebounding power with 10, for his 13th double-double of the season. Chris Cooper hauled down six. ODU has now outrebounded 28 of29 opponents this season.

The Monarchs have now beaten the Dukes six straight times, including three straightat the JMU Convocation Center.

ODU plays W&M in the home finale on saturday at 4 p.m. Monarch seniors BenFinney, Frank Hassell, Darius James and Keyon Carter will be honored pre-game.
