ResultsCAA Swimming and Diving Championship Video Recap Day 2
FAIRFAX, Va. -- Day two of the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Swimming & Diving Championships are in the book with the ODU men's team in third place and the ODU women's team in fourth place.
Nine-time CAA champion UNC-Wilmington currently leads the competition with 240 points and host George Mason sits in second with 183. Old Dominion claims third place with 154 points after day two, followed by Delaware with 146.5 points in fifth and William & Mary in fifth with 132.5 points.
The Monarchs had five top eight individual finishers and three NCAA "B" cut times led by freshman Sidni Hoxha (Tirane, Albania) taking home the 50 freestyle title.
Hoxha claimed the 50 free title for the Monarchs swimming to a NCAA "B" cut top time of 20.01 and hitting the wall .17 seconds ahead of second place finisher Joseph Gallene of UNC-Wilmington. During the prelims of the event, the first-year Monarch posted a time of 19.87 as the only competitor to clock in under-20 seconds. Hoxha's prelim time was only .02 seconds off the ODU record.
The Monarchs had a pair in the top eight of 500 free. Freshman Daniel Camozzo (Herndon, Va.) placed second with NCAA "B" cut time and new ODU record of 4:28.06, replacing the previous Monarch benchmark of 4:28.70 set by Jimmy Sullivan back in 1999. Meanwhile, sophomore Jason Brame (Lynchburg, Va.) took fourth in the event with a time of 4:29.90.
Also swimming their way to a NCAA "B" cut time was the men's 200 free relay team.Comprised of freshman Sidni Hoxha, junior Arni Arnason (Mosfellsbaer, Iceland), senior Ryan Peart (Fort Washington, Va.), and senior Josh Kinas (Resont, Va.), the Monarch squad placed second in a time 1:21.27 and captured the second fastest time in the ODU record books, a mere .06 seconds off the all-time record.
Two of the Monarch's three diving entries on the 1 meter advanced to the finals.Senior David Skorupa (Richmond, Va.) helped add to the Monarchs point total with a sixth place score of 268.15, while sophomore Dale Tornell (Springfield, Va.) finished right behind his teammate in seventh scoring a 268.15.
The Monarchs did have a heartbreaker in the final event of the day. ODU's 400 medley relay team was disqualified for an early take off.
The ODU women's team meanwhile sits in fourth overall with 120 points. James Madison leads the way after day two with 207.5 points, followed by Towson in second with 206 points, and UNC-Wilmington in third with 172.5. Behind the Lady Monarchs is William & Mary in fifth having totaled 109 points.
The Lady Monarchs had four top eight individual times, including a NCAA "B" cut from 2008 Icelandic Olympian Erla Haraldsdottir (Njardvik, Iceland) in the 200 IM.
Haraldsdottir, a junior, was one of three Lady Monarchs in the finals of the 200 IM. Haraldsdottir took third overall with a NCAA "B" cut time of 2:01.81. Earlier in the day, she swam to a time of 2:00.18 in the prelims, besting her own ODU record of 2:01.30. Sophomore Kimberley Rashleigh (Sydney, Australia) swam to a fourth place in the event finishing with a time of 2:03.06 and junior Maddie Stiles (Fairfax, Va.) claimed seventh clocking in at 2:04.41.
The Lady Monarchs also had a top eight finish from freshman Malin Ekstrand (Halmstad, Sweden) in the 50 free. Ekstrand took eighth with a time of 23.95.
The ODU women's 400 medley relay squad recorded a third place finish to round out the day. The team of senior April Barrientos (Va. Beach, Va.), Erla Haraldsdottir, sophomore Jessica Hubert (Newport News, Va.), and Malin Ekstrand combined for the time of 3:43.47.. Their time was good enough to put their names second in the ODU record books, only .06 seconds behind the all-time record.
Two Monarchs and a Lady Monarch also competed in the consolation finals in their respective events on Thursday.
Freshman Abby Vance (Raleigh, N.C.) took 11th in the 500 free posting a time of 4:52.89 and besting her previous top time and landing second all-time in the record books.
Senior Ryan Peart came in 16th in the 50 free with his time of 21.09.
Sophomore James Kuhn (Alexandria, Va.) made an appearance in the 1 meter diving consolation finals taking 11th overall with a score of 256.45.
Competition at the conference championships continue tomorrow with the 200 medley relay, 400 IM, 100 fly, 200 free, 100 breast, 100 back, 800 free, and women's 1 meter diving. You can follow along with live results available here.
