NORFOLK, VA-- Frank Hassell scored 17 points with 10 rebounds, Ben Finney added 11 points and 10 rebounds, and Kent Bazemore scored 12 to lead the Monarchs over Georgia State, 60-43 Tuesday evening. A crowd of 7,307 were in attendance.
The Monarchs improved to 21-6 overall and 12-4 in the CAA tied with VCU andHofstra for second place in the league race. For Hassell, it washis 11th double-double of the season and fifth in the last six games.
Leading 47-42 with 3:58 left in the game, the Monarchs outscored the Panthers 13-1 the rest of the way as ODU hit eight free throws down the stretch. Darius Jameshit four free throws, while Kent Bazemore and Ben Finney hit two each along with a layup by Hassell and a three-pointer by Finney.
The Monarchs took a 25-20 lead into halftime as the Panthers dominated the boards,20-16. James Vincent hauled down eight of his game high 11 rebounds and Jihad Aliscored eight of 14 before the break. The Panthers led only once, 6-5 with 12:52 left in the first half.
In the second half the Monarchs committed only two turnovers to finish with nineand hauled down 22 rebounds to GSU's 17 to win the battle on the boards by one, 38-37.
ODU senior Darius James dished out five assists and committed no turnovers on thenight to go along with his six points and four free throws down the stretch.
In addition to his 12 points, Bazemore blocked three shots and came up with twosteals, while Finney dished out four assists, blocked a shot and also came up withtwo steals. The 6-5 senior now has double-doubles in each of his last two games and three overall.
ODu finished the night shooting .354 (17-48) from the floor, while the Pantherswere .327 (17-52).
The Monarchs return to action on Sunday for the Bracketbusters game at 1 p.m.against Cleveland State of the Horizon League. The contest (White Out) will be televised on ESPN2.
