RICHMOND, Va. Frank Hassell got his 10th double-double of the season with 18 points and 11 rebounds, and Old Dominion defeated Virginia Commonwealth 70-59 on Saturday. It was the Rams first home loss of the season in 12 games.
Ben Finney also had a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds, along with six assists, and Kent Bazemore added 13 points and three steals for the Monarchs (20-6, 10-5 Colonial Athletic Association), who have won six of their past seven games.
The Monarchs outscored the Rams in the paint 46-18 and 19-4 on second-chance points. The Monarchs, second in the nation in rebounding margin at plus-11, outrebounded the Rams 46-21.ODU had 19 offensive rebounds with 19 second chancepoints. VCU had only five offensive rebounds and just four second chance points.Last Wednesday night ODU held W&M to just one offensive rebound.
Old Dominion started the game with a 10-2 run and led 32-24 at halftime. The lead was at least nine points the entire second half and the Monarchs finished the game going 6 of 8 from the foul line in the final 2 minutes.
ODU shot .483 (28-52) from the floor, while VCU was .373 (19-51).
Brandon Rozzell scored 15 points to lead the Rams (20-7, 12-3), who had a two-game winning streak snapped. Jamie Skeen led the Rams with seven rebounds and threeblocked shots.
The 20th victory of the season is the sixth in seven years for ODU under head coach Blaine Taylor which is the most of any ODU men's basketball coach.He was tiedwith Sonny Allen (1965-75) who had five 20 win seasons at ODU.
The win was ODU's first at the Siegel Center since the 2007-08 season. The Monarchsreturn to action on Tuesday night when they host The Panthers of Georgia Statein the Constant Center.
