Hassell Leads Monarchs Past UNCW, 58-43

NORFOLK, Va. - Senior Frank Hassell scored a career-high 25 points, going a career best 9-for-9 from the foul line, to lead Old Dominion University to a 58-43 win over UNC Wilmington Monday night at the Ted Constant Convocation Center.

Old Dominion (15-5/6-3) went on a 16-0 run capped by a layup from Ben Finney to end the first half and held UNCW (10-10/4-5) without a point for the final 10 minutes to take a 35-15 lead into the break.

The Monarchs increased their lead to 21 on a pair of free throws by Hassell before the Seahawks tried to creep back into the game.

UNCW cut the lead to 11 with four minutes to play but four-straight points from Hassell jumped the lead back to 15 as ODU cruised to a 58-43 final.

Hassell pulled down 13 boards to record his sixth double-double of the season while Chris Cooper tied his career-high with nine points and grabbed six rebounds. Kent Bazemore chipped in nine points, four assists and tied his career-high with six steals, equaling the mark he set last year against Georgia State.

ODU shot .362 (21-58) from the floor but crashed the boards for a 43-34 advantage,including 22 offensive rebounds. Besides Hassell's 13 and Coopers six, ten of the 11 Monarchs who played grabbed atleast one board.

ODU also swatted seven shots as Cooper, Hassell and Bazemore had two each. BenFinney led with five assists followed by Bazemore with four.

Chad Tomko scored 19 points, going 5-of-9 from three-point range to lead UNCW.Healso dished out four assists and came up with two steals. The Seahawks shot .348 (16-46) from the field but grabbed 34 rebounds, including 13 offensive. Donte Morales led with six boards.

The Monarchs travel to Atlanta, GA., to take on Georgia State on Wednesday nightat 7 p.m.
