NORFOLK, VA--Old Dominion University All-CAA and All-Region goalkeeper Evan Newton (Virginia Beach, Va.) has been selected in the first round of the MLS Supplemental Draft by the Houston Dynamo.
"I am really excited about going to Houston," said Newton. "I have been keeping up with the team. Iknow Corey Ashe who is also from Virginia Beach, and have relatives living there as well. Really looking forward to working hard and earning a spot on the team."
"We are very happy for Evan to be given this opportunity to make an MLS Team Roster, " said ODU HeadCoach Alan Dawson. "He is a very talented and hard working goalkeeper who we believe will excel at the next level."
Newton completed the season with six shutouts, 74 saves and a 1.07 goals against average this year forODU. He is ODU's all-time leader in both saves with 254 and 36 career shutouts. Newton was also named first team All-CAA and to the NSCAA All-South Atlantic Region team. Newton graduated with a degree in sports management last December.
The Monarchs finished the season with a 10-7-2 record and advanced to the NCAA College Cup's secondRound after beating defending National Champion Virginia, 1-0 in the first round. ODU has competed inSeven of the last nine NCAA College Cups.
Newton is the sixth Monarch soccer player to be selected in the MLS draft with Carols Mendes (NY/NJ Red Bull) and Nane Joseph (Toronto FC) who played this past season. Two-time CAA Defender of the Year David Horst was a 2008 first round "Super Draft" selection (14th overall pick) by Real Salt Lake, and last year Nane Joseph was the 53rd overall pick and fourth round selection in the Super Draft by Toronto.
