Old Dominion Dominates The Boards In Win Over Hofstra, 75-64

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. - Frank Hassell had 18 points and 13 rebounds to lead Old Dominion over Hofstra 75-64 on Saturday.The victory was the Monarchsfirst at Hofstra since ODU defeated the Pride, 61-51 in the 2006 NIT quarterfinals.

Kent Bazemore also had 18 points and Ben Finneyscored nine points with nine rebounds and a career high eight assists for theMonarchs (13-4, 4-2 Colonial Athletic Association), who snapped Hofstra's 10-game conference winning streak.

Old Dominion fell behind 12-0 with 14:11 left early and trailed for most of the first half, but took a 29-27 lead into the break on a layup by Frank Hassell. The Monarchs used a 10-3 run to jump out to a 42-33 lead on a steal and layup from Ben Finney with 15:45 left.

Charles Jenkins scored four quick points for the Pride (11-6, 5-1) to bring them within 46-44.

It remained close, with the Monarchs leading 60-56, before Bazemore hit a 3-pointer and then fed Finney for a layup off a steal to seal it.

Old Dominion outrebounded the Pride 52-28, snapping Hofstra's four-game winning streak. ODU shot .452 (28-62) from the field, but were .529 (18-34) in the secondhalf. Hofstra was .373 from the field (22-39).

All nine Monarchs who played scored atleast two points and hauled down atleast one rebound. Junior Chris Cooper hauled down nine boards to go along with eight points.

Hassell, the CAA Co-Player of the Week this week with Jenkins was two-for-six in thefirst half, but improved to five-of-eight in the second half along with seven of his 13 rebounds. This was Hassell's fouth double-double of the year.

Kent Bazemore dished out four assists and had two steals and a blocked shot. KeyonCarter and Darius James both had eight points each for ODU.

Jenkins and Mike Moore scored 19 points for the Pride. Jenkins was did not hita three and was six-for-16 from the field. Greg Washington blocked five first half shots for Hofstra and David Imes and Mike Moore both had a team best six boards.

The Monarchs return to action Wednesday night when they host James Madison at 7 p.m.in the Ted Constant Convocation Center.

Tickets for the Monarchs basketball games with James Madison University on Jan. 19 at 7 p.m, and VCU on Jan. 22 at 4 p.m. are sold out. Less than 200 student tickets remain for the James Madison contest, and ODU students with a current ID can pick up their ticket at the Constant Center box office Tuesday, Jan. 18 from 10 a.m. - 6 p.m. No student guest tickets are available. All student tickets for the VCU game have been distributed.
