Drexel Rallies to Defeat Monarchs, 62-57

PHILADELPHIA,PA-- Drexel opened thesecond half outscoring ODU 16-2 and went on to defeat the Monarchs, 62-57 on ESPNU Thursday night. Kent Bazemore and Keyon Carter led theMonarchs with 13 points each. The Dragons also became the first team to outreboundthe Monarchs this season, winning the battle of the boards, 47-37.

ODU led by as many as 12,with 3:51 left in the first half, 30-18 and by eight 32-24 at halftime. But after a Kent Bazemore basket with 17:55 left put ODU up 34-26, the Monarchs would not score another point until 11:05 mark on a free throw byChris Cooper. At that point, Drexel was up 40-35.

The Dragons then went on another 8-0 run to make it 48-35 with 8:00 left after twofree throws by Gerald Colds. Drexel would lead by as many as 16, 53-37 with 6:09 left in the game. The Monarchs would then finish the game on a 20-9 run for the final margin of 62-57.

Besides Bazemore and Carter's 13, Ben Finney added 12 points and a team high sevenrebounds along with two steals. Carter also hauled down six rebounds for the Monarchs. Eight of the nine Monarchs who played scored tonight.

Drexel was led by Daryl McCoy with 11 points and a game high 16 rebounds. Chris Fouch came off the bench to scored a game high 16 points, while Samme Givens and Gerald Coles added 12 points each. Givens and Dartaye Ruffin each had seven reboundson the night.

Drexel shot .389 (21-54) from the floor, while the Monarchs were .349 (22-63).Both teams made four three-point baskets and Drexel was 16-28 from the free throwline to ODU's 9-15.

The Monarchs committed only five turnovers the entire game, just one in the firsthalf, while Drexel committed 10.

The Monarchs return to action Saturday afternoon when they travel to Hempstead,NYto take on league leading Hofstra (11-5/5-0) in a 4 p.m. contest that will be televised by Comcast Sportsnet.
