NORFOLK, Va. -- The Old Dominion Lady Monarchs (19-13) hit the road to face Providence College in the 2010 Women's National Invitation Tournament Second Round, Monday night. The two teams will play in Mullaney Gymnasium at Alumni Hall on the campus of Providence College with tip set for 7:00 p.m.
Old Dominion enters the second round after a 63-55 win at home against American University, while the Friars advanced with a 64-58 win at Boston University. The Lady Monarchs got double-digit scoring from sophomore Tia Lewis (16 pts) and junior Jasmine Parker (14 pts) in the win, while Lewis also hauled in a game-high nine rebounds.
Parker is leading the squad with 11.0 points per game this season, but the Lady Monarchs have bought into the team concept, as four different players are averaging over 9.5 points per game. Parker is followed by Lewis with 10.9, junior Shadasia Green with 10.7 and senior Jessica Canady with 9.6 per game. Parker is climbing the charts for Old Dominion, setting new career-highs in nearly every statistical category this year, including assists, steals, points and rebounds.
ODU has never lost to the Friars, boasting a 3-0 advantage on the all-time series, but the two teams have not faced since the 1993-94 season. The winner of the second round game will travel to face Maryland on Thursday, March 25 at 7:00 p.m
Providence has been led by senior and First Team All-BIG EAST guard, Chelsea Marandola. The 5-8 guard is among the nation's best three-point shooters and is putting up over 18 points per game this season. She also leads the team in rebounding with 5.1 per contest.
The second round matchup will begin at 7:00 p.m. and can be found streaming live via the Providence College athletics website for free. Lady Monarchs broadcaster Tony Mercurio will have the call on ESPN Radio 94.1 FM and can also be heard on Monarch TV tomorrow night.
