NORFOLK, Va. - Defense was the story for the Old Dominion women's basketball team Wednesday evening as the Lady Monarchs forced 22 turnovers and held George Washington to 26.0 percent shooting from the field in a 60-35 victory over the Colonials at the Ted Constant Center Wednesday evening.
George Washington's 35 points is the lowest scored against ODU since Delaware State was only able to muster 28 in a game verse the Lady Monarchs on Dec. 20, 2007. The Colonials netted only 13 points in the first half, which was the lowest since that same game, when the Hornets tallied just 12 points in the opening stanza en route to losing 70-28.
Senior Tia Lewis led Old Dominion (4-3) with a game-high 15 points and 11 rebounds. Both marks are season-high's for the forward who recorded her second double-double of the season. Sophomore Jo Guilford hit for a career-high 13 points on 5-of-9 shooting, while senior Shadasia Green posted seven points and eight rebounds in the win.
George Washington (4-4) was paced by Kye Allums' nine points on 3-of-5 shooting.
The Colonials started the game off flat, going 0-of-4 from the field and turning the ball over seven times before scoring their first bucket at the 13:57 mark. By that time, the Lady Monarchs had jumped out to a 5-0 lead, with Green registering all of ODU's points.
George Washington rallied back with a 9-4 run to tie the game on a Kristin Aldridge lay-in midway through the opening stanza. The Lady Monarchs would lockdown on defense from that point on, ending the half on a 13-4 run to go up 22-13 at the break.
A 7-2 spurt by the Colonials out of the locker room kept the game close early in the second half. Leading 24-20 at the 17:51 mark, ODU began to find its stroke. The Lady Monarchs hit 12 of their final 25 shots (48%) and a 27-9 run put Old Dominion up 51-29 with just over six minutes to play. GW would get no closer than 18 the rest of the way.
The Lady Monarchs won the battle of the boards (43-39) for just the second time this season and ODU had a 15-0 edge in fast break points.
Old Dominion next hits the road for a Sunday matchup at Richmond. The Lady Monarchs have won 21 straight against the Spiders, but the squads haven't met since the 2001.
