Delaware Defeats Monarchs, 75-67 In CAA Opener

NEWARK, DE-Jawan Carter scored 29 points to help lead Delaware (3-2/1-0)to a 75-67 CAAvictory over the Monarchs Saturday night. ODU (5-2/0-1)was led by Frank Hassell with 19 points and nine rebounds along with Kent Bazemore's 17 points and a career high 10 rebounds. BenFinney also chipped in nine points and a career high 12 boards. The loss endedODU's five-game winning streak.

The Fightin' Blue Hen's led, 29-24 at halftime as ODU committed 11 turnovers alongwith .300 (6-20) shooting from the floor. Bazemore led the Monarchs with nine pointsat half on seven of eight shooting from the free throw line. Carter also had ninepoints for Delaware.

In the second half UD built an 11-point lead, 54-43 with 9:34 left after a DevonSaddler basket.

The Monarchs rallied and cut the margin to two points, 56-54 with 5:24 left after two free throws from Frank Hassell, but could get no closer.

Delaware expanded the lead back to eight after a free throw by Hakim McCullar,a basket byDevon Saddler and a trey Jawan Carter for a 62-54 lead with 3:31 leftin the game.

The Monarchs finished the night outrebounded UD, 48-32,and committed only threeturnovers in the second half. ODU shot only .350 (21-60) from the floor, whileDelaware was .431 (22-51). Carter was 6-12 from the floor and from beyond thethree point line. He then added 11 second half free throws late in the game.

Bazemore's double-double was his career first, and he had two steals. Juniorcenter Chris Cooper came off the bench to score five points and haul down eightrebounds and Trian Iliadis scored 11 as he hit four-for-seven from the floor.

Hassell was eight-for-12 from the floor and Bazemore hit nine-of-11 from thefree throw line. Junior Marquel De Lancey led ODU with three assists.

The Monarchs return to action Tuesday night in Greenville, NC. when they playat East Carolina in a 7 p.m. tip.
