The annual "Meet the Monarchs" Big Blue Club Breakfast will have three datesBeginning Jan. 7. There will also be one on Jan. 28 and Feb. 18.The breakfast's are 7:30 - 9 a.m. at the Constant Center's Big Blue room.$5.00 at the door.
Strong Performance In Non-Conference Play:
CAA teams have compiled an impressive 68-46 record this season against non-conference foes. The CAA is 3-4 against the ACC (ODU over Clemson, VCU and UNCW over Wake Forest), has two wins over the Big East (Drexel over Louisville, JMU over USF), one victory against the Pac 10 (VCU over UCLA) and is 8-6 versus the Atlantic 10 with victories over Xavier (ODU), Saint Joseph's (Drexel), Richmond (ODU) and Dayton (ODU). Nine of the league's losses have come against nationally-ranked opponents. CAA teams are an impressive 39-11 at home, 9-7 on neutral courts and 20-28 on the road.
Five CAA Teams In Top 80 Of RPI:
Five CAA teams are ranked in the top 80 of the RPI through games of Dec. 26 according to Collegiate Basketball News (rpiratings.com). Old Dominion is the top CAA team at #13, followed by Drexel at #15, George Mason at #69, James Madison at #78, and VCU at #79. Only six other conferences (ACC - 6, Big 12 - 6, Big East - 10, Big Ten - 8, Pac 10 - 5, SEC - 6) have five or more teams in the top 80 of the RPI. The CAA is ranked #10 among the nation's 32 Division I conferences.
Streaking:
Several CAA teams head into the final week of December playing well. George Mason is riding a league-best seven-game winning streak. Old Dominion has won nine of its last 10, James Madison has won nine of 11 and Drexel and Hofstra have each won six of their last seven.
ODU Receive Votes In National Polls:
Old Dominion picked up six points in this week's Associated Press and ESPN/USA Today Top 25 polls. ODU is 9-2 with wins over A-10 favorites Xavier, Dayton and Richmond as well as a victory over Clemson of the ACC. The Monarchs travel to 10th-ranked Missouri on Thursday.
Four CAA Teams Ranked In Mid-Major Top 25 Poll: Four CAA teams are ranked in the Mid-Major Top 25 poll released on Dec. 27 by CollegeInsider.com, including three in the top 10. Old Dominion leads the group of CAA teams at #2 while George Mason is ranked #7, Drexel is #9 and VCU is ranked #16. James Madison is the top team among others receiving votes. The CAA was the only conference to have three teams in the top 10 of the poll.
Conference Play Resumes on Jan. 3:
Conference play in the CAA resumes on January 3 when all 12 teams will play three league games in a six-day stretch. Home teams won five of the six matchups when CAA play opened on Dec. 4. Drexel was the lone team to pick up a victory on the road as the Dragons got past Northeastern, 63-58, at Boston's TD Garden. Three games were decided by five points or less, including Georgia State winning at the buzzer over JMU. Other winners included George Mason, Hofstra, VCU and Delaware, which handed preseason league favorite ODU a 75-67 setback.
Crashing The Glass:
Old Dominion is out-rebounding foes by 13.4 per game, while Drexel is out-rebounding opponents by 11.7 per game. The Dragons ranked second in the nation in rebound margin and the Monarchs were third as of Dec. 20, but Drexel was beaten 38-27 on the glass at #5 Syracuse last Wednesday.
Doubling Up:
29 players representing all 12 CAA teams have recorded double-doubles. JMU's Denzel Bowles has a league-high six double-doubles, while Drexel's Samme Givens and Towson's Braxton Dupree have five and JMU's Rayshawn Goins, ODU's Frank Hassell and VCU's Jamie Skeen have three.
