With time running down in its Paradise Jam championship victory over Xavier, Old Dominion senior Ben Finney had a message for his team. Giddy smiles were rampant, and the bench was enjoying the moment.
"Hey," Finney exclaimed in a leadership tone, finger-pointing, "this is what we do."
The secret is slipping out: ODU's brand is winning, no matter the opponent. Coach Blaine Taylor scheduled heavy this year, with games against Georgetown, Clemson, Xavier, Missouri, Richmond, and Dayton. The quotable coach deadpans that the schedule was not created in the hopes of impressing the NCAA selection committee. It's bigger.
