RICHMOND, Va. - Senior Amanda Bieber (Elizabethtown, Pa.) was recognized by the Colonial Athletic Association Tuesday as the league announced their Fall Sport Scholar-Athlete Award winners.
Six student-athletes, who are among the best in their sport and standouts in the classroom as well, have been honored by the league as recipients of the CAA Scholar-Athlete Award for the fall sports season.
Bieber is a Dean's List student at ODU and a three-time CAA Commissioner's Academic Award recipient. The senior biology major has been named to the NFHCA National Academic Squad for the past three years and was selected to the 2009 Mid-Atlantic High Performance Training Squad.
On the field this season, Bieber anchored an ODU defense that posted seven shutouts and limited five other opponents to only one goal. Three of the shutouts came against nationally ranked foes (Boston U., Drexel and Michigan). The Lady Monarchs captured their 14th CAA championship in 2010 and advanced to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament.
The conference honors a Scholar-Athlete in each of its 23 sports. Nominees for the award must be a starter or important reserve on their team and must have a cumulative grade point average of 3.25. The winners were selected by a vote of the sports information directors at each CAA institution.
Earning the CAA Scholar-Athlete Award in the fall sports were: Ed Bonnevie of Delaware in men's cross country, Brandi Gervais of Towson in women's cross country, Amanda Bieber of Old Dominion in field hockey, Nathaniel Baako of William and Mary in men's soccer, Dana Bergstrom of Hofstra in women's soccer and Vineece Verdun of Georgia State in volleyball. A scholar-athlete for CAA Football will be chosen in January.
